The Setting

The Kingdom of Faldour is located on a sea coast. Its prosperity waxes and wanes somewhat with the fierce summer storms that can ravage the docks and make the seas impassible. The current king, Robard the VIII, wishes to increase his wealth and popularity by ending the cycle of storms. However, the kingdom is landlocked, being ringed by tall, inhospitable Kraghor Mountains. Only one pass has ever been found through these mountains, but it has been closed for centuries. The locals believe it is cursed.

The mountain pass, though harsh in the winter, provided trade access to the kingdom during the summer months. It was also reported to grow some of the finest wine grapes in the world, and even now, any bottles that are found sell for exorbitant amounts, now matter how sour the vintages may have become. Two small towns and a travelers' way station are purported to exist amongst those high peaks, though nobody knows what condition they may be in these days.

Not even the eldest members of the kingdom, nor its brightest historians, know why the land is considered cursed, or what the nature of this supposed curse is. Records only indicate that all who attempted to investigate the disappearances never returned. Some indicate that some kind of blight wiped the people from the land, or that maybe some angry god did it themselves.
